Yukon Temporary Workers to Receive Extended Work Permits Amid Permanent Residency Applications

October 8, 2024

Canada’s federal government and Yukon have agreed to allow up to 215 temporary foreign workers to continue working while their permanent residency applications are processed through the Yukon Nominee Program (YNP).

This move addresses the critical labor shortage in Yukon by allowing these skilled workers to stay and contribute to the region’s economy.

Eligible temporary workers, identified and supported by the territorial government, are employed in key sectors and must meet the necessary criteria for the program.

The workers are expected to transition to permanent residency by 2025 and 2026.

Last year, almost 23 percent of permanent resident admissions in Canada came through Provincial and Territorial Nominee Programs, highlighting the importance of these regional initiatives for Canada’s immigration system.

Under the agreement, foreign workers already residing in Yukon with work permits that expire after May 16 or are set to expire by the end of 2024 can apply for a new Yukon-specific work permit.

The permit will be valid for up to two years, allowing them to continue working while awaiting permanent residency.

Employers of these foreign workers are expected to nominate them for permanent residency through the YNP by 2025 or 2026.

The Yukon government will provide letters of support to accompany work permit applications submitted to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

This federal-territorial deal follows lobbying by Yukon businesses, which have struggled to find enough workers due to a temporary intake pause under the YNP. It ensures the continuation of critical labor contributions while facilitating the transition to permanent residency.
