Canadian Citizenship Application

Canadian Citizenship Application

You are eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship if you are above 18 years of age and have a permanent residence status. Citizenship application to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) involves a formal application with relevant documents, a citizenship test, and a citizenship interview if necessary. Get in touch with a professional immigration expert to facilitate the application process by understanding all requirements to apply for Canadian citizenship.

Following are the main aspects of the application process to obtain Canadian citizenship status. The process begins with confirming your eligibility to apply for citizenship.

Checking the eligibility

You are eligible to apply for citizenship if you fulfill the following criteria:

  • You are a permanent resident of Canada by fulfilling all conditions
  • You have completed 1095 days of physical presence in Canada during the five years preceding the date of application
  • You are filing income tax returns for three years out of the five years
  • You have adequate knowledge of the French or English language
  • You are not inadmissible on the grounds of security
  • There are no removal orders against you

You must ensure that there are no violations of any terms and conditions of the Permanent Residence. Review your PR documents to ensure compliance with the terms of permanent residence.

Individuals who had been refused Canadian citizenship in the past because of misrepresentation are not eligible to apply. Similarly, revoking citizenship will also disqualify the individual from becoming a citizen of Canada.

Gather the necessary documents

The following documents should accompany your application for citizenship:

  • Form CIT 0407 to demonstrate online computation of your Physical Presence
  • Color photos of all travel documents, including valid and old passports covering the five year eligibility period
  • Two ID proofs in the form of photocopies. You may submit any two documents like foreign ID documents, age of majority, health insurance card, PR card, driver’s license, passport, and a senior citizen card.
  • Proof of language ability for applicants between 18 to 54 years of age, like proof to establish education in English or French languages and CLB score document
  • Two citizenship photographs
  • Online payment receipt of application fees

Use the latest version of the application form that is updated not before October 20. You may send the application form through an online medium or by courier.

Preparing for a citizenship test

All applicants of Canadian citizenship must write the citizenship test provided they are between 18 and 54 years of age. The citizenship test aims at testing the applicant’s knowledge and awareness about various aspects of Canada. Revise your understanding of Canada’s geography, history, institutions, symbols, citizenship values, rights, and responsibilities.

IRCC will offer a study guide to all candidates appearing for the citizenship test. The guide aims at enabling applicants to achieve a minimum passing grade. Applicants must carry original documentation like photo identification, immigration papers, permanent residence cards, and passports. The following documents are acceptable to demonstrate language abilities:

  • Proof of Canadian Level Benchmark 4 (minimum)
  • Or, the result of an approved testing agency’s language test
  • Transcript of Post-secondary or diploma studies in English or French.

You will receive citizenship approval in writing on successful completion of the citizenship test and the subsequent review by citizenship officials. Following the approval, applicants will receive an invitation to attend the oath ceremony.
