Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

International students can gain Canadian work experience by obtaining the Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP). The PGWP enables you to explore job opportunities and live in Canada after your post-secondary study program.

Canada offers Post Graduate Work Permit to international students for improving their professional qualification while boosting a career. An experienced immigration consultant is a dependable resource to review your profile and leverage the unique opportunity of PGWP.

Highlights

The Post Graduate Work Permit allows the applicant to find a job with any employer because a PGWP grants an open work permit. It is valid for the period which is equivalent to the course period. Select the study program with a longer duration if you wish to continue working in Canada after graduation. You can apply for a Post Graduate Study Permit for a maximum period of three years, depending upon the study program.

International students can consider working anywhere in Canada by getting a Post Graduate Work Permit. They should participate in the study program for over fifty percent of its duration to become eligible for PGWP. One must ensure that the validity of the passport covers the entire PGWP’s length because a student is eligible for only a single Post Graduate Work Permit.

PGWP- eligibility requirements

The Post Graduate Working Program is for all international students over 18 years of age. One must complete a study program of not less than eight months’ duration to become eligible for the PGWP. The study program should be from a Designated Learning Institute, and the applicant must have a transcript and letter of confirmation about the official completion of the course. The student must be physically present for the study program for over 50% of the course duration to become eligible to apply for a Post Graduate Work Permit.

You need to understand that the validity period of a Post Graduate Work Permit is in direct relation with the duration of the Study Program. The following details will help you plan your study program if you are considering Canadian work experience after completion of the study program:

  • Study course lasting less than eight months– No eligibility for Post Graduate Work Permit
  • The study program’s duration is less than 24 months– The validity period of PGWP will be the same as that of the study course. The PGWP will be valid for 20 months for the study program of 20 months duration.
  • A study program lasts more than 24 months– The validity of the study permit will be 36 months.
  • More than one study program– Merging of study programs can improve the PGWP duration. One must ensure that the individual courses are over eight months’ duration. The total period will determine PGWP’s validity.

Importance of the PGWP deadline

You have six months to apply for a Post Graduate Work Permit after securing an official letter from your Designated Learning Institution confirming that you have completed the Study Program by meeting all requirements. You will need the official transcript from the Designated Learning Institution and confirmation of finishing the study program while applying for a Post Graduate Work Permit.

There is a possibility that your study permit is about to expire before getting a transcript. It leaves you with two options to stay in Canada while waiting for the final results.

  • Extend your stay in Canada by applying for a visitor visa
  • Apply for a Post Graduate Work Permit after leaving Canada

You may consider working in Canada after applying for a Post Graduate Work Permit as you wait for the approval of your PGWP application. You need not hold a work permit if your application for a PGWP is made prior to the expiry of the study permit. You can consider restoring your status even after the expiration of the study permit before the grace period of ninety days from the date of a study permit’s expiry.
