Saskatchewan Introduces New Immigration Services Act to Enhance Worker Protections

July 17, 2024

The Immigration Services Act, recently introduced in Saskatchewan, received positive feedback from various stakeholders. The new legislation, which took effect on July 1, aims to enhance the province’s ability to manage and monitor its immigration system, providing better protection for foreign workers against exploitation.

The new legislation replaces the Foreign Worker Recruitment and Immigration Services Act (FWRISA) and unifies all immigration authorities in Saskatchewan under a single legislative body.

Introduced in April, the Act aims to enable the province to better respond to the immigration system’s dynamic and changing needs while streamlining the recruitment process for employers looking to hire from outside Canada.

The Regina Open Door Society has expressed support for the Act, emphasizing that it strengthens the framework for supporting newcomers in Saskatchewan. The enhanced legal protections are expected to help organizations better safeguard the interests of those arriving in the province and serve them better.

The new legislation includes provisions for increasing the maximum fine amounts for offenses or violations and implementing new administrative penalties. It also increases the oversight of immigration recruiters, consultants, and employers who are recruiting internationally. According to reports, these fines would be the highest in the country.

Saskatchewan’s government believes that the new legislation will support its goal of reaching 1.4 million people by 2030. The strengthened regulations and protections are expected to attract more newcomers to Saskatchewan, contributing to economic growth and addressing labor market needs.

The province continues to attract newcomers from around the world, which is vital for the economy’s growth and for filling labor market needs. The new legislation will enhance Saskatchewan’s ability to protect foreign workers as they arrive in the province, streamline employer processing, and set a new standard for program integrity in Canada.
