Ontario Trillium Benefit November 8 Payment Set to Ease Financial Pressures for Eligible Households

November 8, 2024

On November 8, 2024, Ontario residents can expect their latest Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) payment to help low- to moderate-income households manage rising living expenses. The OTB offers essential support by offsetting costs associated with property taxes, energy bills, and the provincial portion of sales tax.

The OTB is a key tax credit administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) that combines three provincial benefits: the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (OEPTC), the Northern Ontario Energy Credit (NOEC), and the Ontario Sales Tax Credit (OSTC). Each credit targets specific financial pressures.

The OEPTC assists with property tax and energy expenses, the NOEC offers aid for Northern Ontario residents with high energy costs, and the OSTC provides relief from the Ontario portion of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).

Eligibility is based on income from the prior tax return, residency, and specific criteria for each credit. Generally, applicants must have been Ontario residents by the end of the previous year and have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN).

Further criteria apply for each credit component: for instance, to qualify for the NOEC, applicants must be residents of Northern Ontario, 18 or older, or live with dependents.

Earlier this year, the OTB increased to address the cost of living. Households receiving more than $360 annually receive monthly payments from July through June, while those receiving less receive a one-time payment issued in July.

To receive OTB payments on time, eligible individuals should file their tax return annually, even if they have no income, and keep direct deposit information updated on their CRA account. Keeping expense records, such as energy bills and property taxes, is also beneficial to support claims if needed.

The upcoming payment on November 8 will be a timely resource for Ontario households facing ongoing inflationary pressures. For more detailed guidance, the CRA’s website offers additional information, and tax professionals can provide personalized advice to ensure residents receive their full benefit entitlement.
