Northwest Territories Nominee Program Reaches Full Capacity in Historic First

July 29, 2024

For the first time, the Northwest Territories Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) hit its maximum number of allocations in July. This means no new applications can be accepted for the rest of the year.

According to Education, Culture, and Employment Minister Caitlin Cleveland, the territory has reached its federal allocation of 300 nominees for the year. This increase in interest is seen as a positive development that will help to build a stronger and more diverse community.

The number of nominations through the Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP) has increased significantly in recent years. 2021 there were 62 nominations, which rose to 139 in 2022. This year, the number has reached 300.

By July 22, 2024, the government had processed 144 nominations from more than 300 applications.

Cleveland is pushing for even higher allocations in the future.

Decisions on applications already submitted under the NTNP are expected this autumn. Applications received before July 22 will not be affected by the pause in intake.

The Francophone stream of the NTNP, launched in 2022, allows Francophones to apply if they are employed by an employer in the Northwest Territories or have a valid job offer from a territorial employer. This stream has contributed to the overall increase in applications.

Employers use the NTNP to hire and retain quality staff for jobs the local workforce cannot fill.

Business stream applicants need a personal net worth of at least $500,000 if starting or buying a business within or at least $250,000 outside Yellowknife. They must also show proficiency at level four of the Canadian Language Benchmark in English or the equivalent level in French. The test results must be, at most, two years from the time of application.

The Northwest Territories PNP is experiencing unprecedented growth, reflecting the region’s increasing attractiveness to immigrants. The territory is working hard to manage this growth while ensuring newcomers and local communities benefit from the program.
