Canada’s population is projected to grow by more than half over the next 50 years, driven largely by immigration. According to new forecasts from Statistics Canada, the country’s population is expected to reach 62.8 million by 2073, up from 40.1 million in 2023. This represents a 57 percent increase, with an average annual growth rate of approximately 0.9 percent under the medium-growth scenario.
Statistics Canada also provided low and high growth projections. In the low-growth scenario, the population could reach 47.1 million, while in the high-growth scenario, it could soar to 87.2 million. These scenarios’ average annual growth rate would range from 0.3 percent to 1.6 percent.
The projections indicate that natural population growth in Canada, calculated as births minus deaths, will turn negative by 2036. From that point forward, immigration will become the primary driver of population increases.
In response to concerns over housing shortages, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced plans to reduce the number of temporary foreign workers entering Canada.
The government aims to lower temporary foreign immigration by about 20 percent over the next three years. This decision follows a post-pandemic surge in temporary foreign workers, which some researchers believe has contributed to higher unemployment rates among immigrants.
The government also plans to limit the hiring of low-wage temporary foreign workers in regions with six percent or higher unemployment rates. Exceptions will be made for essential sectors, such as agriculture and food processing.
Canada’s current immigration levels plan includes the admission of approximately 485,000 permanent residents in 2024, with targets increasing to 500,000 in 2025 and 2026. The focus on immigration is expected to play a critical role in sustaining Canada’s population growth amid declining natural growth rates.
