Canada Set to Surpass Immigration Targets with 490,000 Newcomers in 2024

June 26, 2024

According to the latest data from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Canada is set to welcome over 490,000 immigrants in 2024. In April, the country saw a 22 percent increase in new permanent residents, with 42,545 arrivals, up from 34,860 in March.

Despite a strong start to the year with 47,755 new permanent residents in January, immigration numbers dipped in February and March before rebounding in April.

In the first four months of 2024, Canada welcomed 164,265 new permanent residents, a 6.2 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2023.

Projecting from these numbers, Canada is on track to admit 492,795 new permanent residents by the end of the year, surpassing last year’s record of 471,810 and exceeding the target set in the 2024-2026 Immigration Levels Plan.

Ontario remained the top destination for newcomers, with 70,250 new permanent residents settling in the province in the first third of the year. This accounts for almost 42.8 percent of all immigrants to Canada during this period.

Economic programs contributed significantly to this influx, with 54.5 percent of new permanent residents arriving through various initiatives, including the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program, Agri-Food Immigration Pilot, and Canadian Experience Class.

New Brunswick experienced the largest percentage increase in immigration in April, with a 64.1 percent rise in new arrivals. The Northwest Territories also saw a 16.7 percent increase. However, Nunavut received only 20 new permanent residents so far this year.

Canada’s two-tier immigration system, which includes the Federal Express Entry system and the Provincial Nominee Programs, continues to play a crucial role in attracting foreign nationals.

Canada plans to welcome 485,000 new permanent residents in 2024 and 500,000 in 2025 and 2026. The country is poised to sustain high immigration levels in the coming years.
