On October 30, 2024, Canada introduced new temporary immigration measures to support Lebanese nationals and their families who fled the country due to its escalating crisis. Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced that under this program, Lebanese nationals already in Canada, along with their immediate family members, can extend their stay until July 31, 2025.
The program offers temporary stability for families who left Lebanon following intensifying hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, including frequent rocket fire, missile attacks, and airstrikes. To ease this process, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is waiving application fees for Lebanese nationals and eligible foreign nationals who have been in Canada since late September 2024.
Eligible applicants include Lebanese nationals in Canada with valid temporary resident status and non-Lebanese foreign nationals who are close family members of Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
Family members affected by the first-generation limit on Canadian citizenship are also eligible if they meet the residency criteria. The program also supports individuals evacuated from Lebanon with Canadian government assistance after September 29, 2024.
The Canadian government’s initiative highlights its commitment to supporting families affected by Lebanon’s deepening crisis, offering relief and stability for those caught in the volatile situation.
Canada has pledged over $56 million in humanitarian aid to address the conflict’s urgent needs. This funding, administered through partners like the Canadian Red Cross, will provide essential services such as food, water, and healthcare.
The Canadian Red Cross, in coordination with the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, will deploy this aid directly to help those most affected in Lebanon and surrounding areas.
As the situation remains highly unpredictable, Canada’s government has assured ongoing monitoring of developments in Lebanon to determine further steps as needed. This approach aims to ensure that the country’s response adapts to meet the evolving needs of Canadian and Lebanese nationals who seek refuge within its borders.
