Canada Extends Temporary Policy for Sudanese Conflict Refugees

May 8, 2024

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced a six-month extension of their temporary public policy benefiting family members of citizens or permanent residents who fled the conflict in Sudan. The policy was signed on April 30, 2023 and expired on April 30 this year.

Under this policy, eligible foreign national family members who left Sudan since the outbreak of violence are exempted from paying certain fees, including the Temporary Resident Visa and Temporary Resident Permit processing fees.

Also, the fees for biometric information collection services, essential for travel to Canada, will be waived.

The decision to extend the policy comes amid an extreme humanitarian situation in Sudan, marked by ongoing fighting and shortages of necessities like food, water, and fuel.

Reports from the UN indicate that millions in Sudan are facing severe hunger. Many hospitals and schools have been rendered non-functional.

The extended policy aims to support those who arrived in Canada after April 15, 2023, and may not be able to return to Sudan. Eligible foreign nationals admitted as temporary residents will continue to have the opportunity to apply for fee-exempt open work permits and study permits to assist in their settlement.

They will also benefit from a fee waiver for their application for permanent residence under the family class.

The exemptions granted under this policy are contingent upon meeting specific conditions outlined by IRCC regulations.

These conditions include being a family member of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who left Sudan on or after April 15, 2023, and submitting an application for a temporary resident visa using the designated electronic form for evacuated family members from Sudan.

The extension of this policy underscores Canada’s commitment to providing support and assistance to refugees and displaced persons fleeing conflict and humanitarian crises worldwide.
