Canada Extends Policy of Allowing Visitors to Apply for Work Permits by Two Years

November 25, 2023

Visitor or Tourist Visa holders can apply for Work Permits until February 28, 2025.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) extends the temporary policy that makes visitor visa holders eligible to apply for Work Permits. Visitor visa holders should meet work permit eligibility criteria to benefit from the new policy extension. The eligibility requirements include a valid job offer from a Canadian employer with LMIA approval.

The policy extension enabling visitors to apply for work permits will help Canada address historic labor shortages across industrial sectors. It will facilitate several firms in Canada to fill up vacant job positions. Earlier, visitors to Canada could not apply for work permits from within Canada. They had to leave Canada and submit the work permit application.

The new policy allows visitors to apply for work permits while in Canada. Visitor status is mandatory to be eligible for the work permit policy for tourist or visitor visa holders. The policy extension allows visitors to apply before February 2025 by satisfying primary admissibility criteria.
