Canada Experiences Steady Growth in Spousal Sponsorship Immigration

August 4, 2024

The latest data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reveal a continued increase in the number of spouses and common-law partners immigrating to Canada. The Spousal Sponsorship program welcomed 6,025 new permanent residents in May, marking a 10.7 percent rise from the 5,445 newcomers in April.

This increase is particularly notable following the 12.6 percent rise in April, which was a recovery from a 12.8 percent decline in March. By the end of May, 29,445 new permanent residents had been admitted under the Spousal Sponsorship program.

Despite the lower numbers in February and March, this is still 21.6 percent fewer than the 37,550 new permanent residents recorded during the same period last year.

If the current rate continues, Canada could see approximately 70,668 new permanent residents through the Spousal Sponsorship program by the end of the year. This would be about 6.1 percent fewer than the 75,260 spouses and common-law partners who gained permanent residency last year.

Ontario remains the most popular destination for spousal sponsorship immigrants, with 14,855 spouses and common-law partners settling in the province during the first five months of this year. However, May saw a 15.9 percent decrease in monthly arrivals in Ontario under this program.

In most cases, sponsors do not need to meet income requirements to sponsor a spouse, common-law, or conjugal partner. The exception is if the sponsor is supporting a spouse or partner with a dependent child who has their children.

Processing times for spousal sponsorship applications for those outside Canada and planning to live outside Quebec have improved significantly. The current processing time is 10 months, a considerable reduction from the 20-month timeframe experienced in 2022.
