The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) will introduce a new expression of interest system on September 30, which will cancel the remaining monthly application acceptance dates for 2024.
This new system will allow for the continuous intake of expressions of interest, with workers placed in a selection pool after submission. Candidates will be invited to apply based on their ranking and the province’s labor market needs.
The existing selection pool will still be used for application invitations under the Accelerated Tech Pathway. Alberta is also launching a new immigration pathway specifically for law enforcement, aimed at helping police services address crime and meet recruitment goals.
Applicants invited under this pathway must have a job offer from a member of the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police and meet all Express Entry criteria.
In 2023, Alberta welcomed 57,585 new permanent residents, a 16.3 percent increase from the previous year. The province also admitted 59,995 temporary foreign workers through the International Mobility Program (IMP) and 20,415 through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). Furthermore, Alberta issued 41,950 study permits to international students in the same year.
Alberta’s immigration system allows foreign nationals to gain permanent residency through the federal Express Entry system, which includes the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program, Federal Skilled Trades (FST) program, Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).
The AAIP offers several streams, including the Alberta Opportunity Stream, Express Entry Stream, Rural Renewal Stream, Farm Stream, Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream, Graduate Entrepreneur Stream, and Rural Entrepreneur Stream. Each stream is designed to attract skilled workers, entrepreneurs, and investors to the province, contributing to Alberta’s economic growth.
