Canada has extended its streamlined medical examination process for certain immigrants, a measure to reduce backlogs and expedite the immigration process. Initially introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, the program will continue until 2029.
This extension benefits applicants who have undergone a medical examination within the past five years, easing the transition for newcomers.
The streamlined process applies to individuals submitting new or pending applications for permanent or temporary residence from within Canada. This includes applicants for permanent residency, work permits, and certain family-class immigrants.
Those who have previously passed an Immigration Medical Examination (IME) and did not have serious health concerns are exempt from undergoing a new medical exam.
The extension is part of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) efforts to alleviate pressure on the healthcare system and immigration processing.
IRCC aims to speed up application processing and reduce delays by exempting eligible immigrants from repeat medical examinations. The system has been particularly beneficial for family reunification applicants and essential workers.
Canada has set ambitious immigration targets, planning to welcome over 500,000 new permanent residents annually by 2025. The streamlined medical exam process is expected to contribute to achieving these goals by improving the efficiency of immigration procedures.
Despite the faster processing times, public health remains a priority. Applicants who have experienced a change in health status since their last IME or were flagged for medical follow-ups must undergo a full examination.
The IRCC will notify eligible immigrants about their exemption from a new medical exam and inform those still requiring one of the next steps. This extension ensures Canada meets its immigration goals while maintaining public health standards.
