Canada Expands Work Permit Access for Start-Up Visa Applicants

October 8, 2024

Canada’s immigration authorities have announced a major change: They are now allowing Start-Up Visa (SUV) candidates to apply for an open work permit.

Effective October 3, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced this permit, enabling candidates to work for almost any employer while they build their businesses.

Previously, SUV candidates were only entitled to a closed work permit, restricting them to working solely for the business associated with their visa application.

The new open work permit, valid for three years, provides more flexibility, allowing candidates to supplement their income with other jobs as they establish their businesses in Canada.

Candidates who applied before the October 3 change can still apply for the new open work permit by submitting a fresh application.

Spouses or partners of candidates may apply for an open work permit, and dependent children can apply for a study permit if they plan to attend school in Canada.

To qualify for the open work permit, applicants must have applied for permanent residence through the Start-Up Visa program and received their Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR) letter. Key team members, excluding those planning to live in Quebec, must also demonstrate that their work will bring significant economic benefits to Canada.

Applications must be submitted online, and processing times will vary depending on the applicant’s country of residence.

The permit allows candidates greater financial stability while pursuing entrepreneurial ventures, further supporting innovation and business development across Canada.
